ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
The practice of being mindful is rapidly changing the way we lead our lives as individuals and as a society. As therapists, integrating mindfulness practices into daily life can become one of the best lifestyle changes to steady the ship of our own health and emotions, but where do we start? Mindfulness was never a part of our graduate school training, and cannot be self-taught or learned simply by traditional didactic methods. We need to EXPERIENCE the many forms of mindful awareness ourselves before we can make the jump to bringing mindfulness practices into the clinical setting with those we treat in psychotherapy. Come and start the journey with this two-session introductory workshop, and hopefully leave with a better sense of where mindfulness can take both you and your patients.
Participants should bring a yoga mat and a pillow.
Participants Will Be Able To: 1. Explain the scientific and physiological foundations of mindfulness practice 2. Describe the non-conceptual nature of “being mind” and “present moment” awareness. 3. Define the essential elements of mindfulness work in developing a personal practice 4. Write a script to introduce mindfulness practice as a therapist/patient/collaboration 5. Develop strategies for managing and overcoming the resistance of “beginner’s mind” 6. Participate in a variety of live mindfulness meditation practices such as an eating meditation, a breathing meditation, a walking meditation, a body scan meditation and a loving kindness meditation 7. Access a library of online and other professional training resources for starting or deepening daily mindfulness practice 8. Plan and implement a daily meditation practice that fits into his/her own unique lifestyle
