Letter to Referral Sources
Dear Colleagues, Parents,
and Friends:
Over my thirty years as a
practicing School Psychologist and twenty-one years in private
practice, much has changed in how we deliver mental health treatment
services to children, adolescents, and young adults. We have slowly
begun to move away from the “medical model” and the construct of
mental health “problems” (in which mental health providers seek only
to restore an individual’s baseline functioning), to a much broader
goal of teaching behavioral skills and practices that can enrich
people’s lives and give them the tools to achieve peace of mind, no
matter what obstacles may block their path. From this perspective,
young people don’t only learn how to “cope” with situational anger,
anxiety, and depression. They learn how to live with difficult mood
states and accept them as part of life. Then they can move
forward in a lifelong learning process of emotional self-control,
without allowing their emotions to run the show. In a word, they
learn how to become mindful, and live in their bodies while
feeling strong emotion.
I still specialize in the
assessment of suicidal risk in adolescents, borderline personality
disorder, and problems of students who have been placed on long-term
suspension by school districts. I routinely teach individual
dialectical behavior therapy skills as part of a
mindfulness-based stress reduction treatment plan.
Please advise your
families that I am not a part of any managed care plans, and
therefore do not accept third-party reimbursement.
I offer:
1. Twelve-month, 24-hour
telephone access to my cell phone for emergencies
(631) 543-8336
2. Communication via
e-mail in between scheduled sessions
3. Bi-weekly sessions
instead of weekly sessions as long as there is no imminent crisis
4. Four-session
diagnostic consultations, with the intent of referring the family
with a set of treatment guidelines to an in-network provider
5. Telephone sessions
for college students who may not have access to a local, private
mental health provider
6. Assessment of
college-bound students with disabilities to educate students and
parents about various service options and NYSED programs such as
VESID
I coordinate treatment
and communicate with professional referral sources (with permission
from the client or family).
I welcome speaking with
you about referrals and answering your questions. Thank
you for your continued interest in my practice and how I can help
those you care about.
Best Wishes,
Anthony Pantaleno, Ph.D.,
